Speak, with care

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” ~ Mother Theresa

I find it incredibly heartbreaking when I see the sadness in the eyes of someone with a broken spirit. While their mouth is upturned into a smile, their eyes simply cannot reflect even the smallest hint of happiness.

Words are powerful tools, with a lasting impact. They can’t be withdrawn or erased with an apology. “Brutal honesty” has no place in any relationship. How are YOUR words affecting your loved ones? Pay attention to their reaction to what you say. Don’t expect someone to “deal” with what you tell them because you’re doing them a “favor” by being honest. There are ways to be honest and preserve the relationship you have.

Success is not measured by the exploitation of the power and control you have over someone. Instead, it’s about the ability to make someone feel secure, cherished and loved in a world where people are judged by their appearance and differences. It’s about the ability to lift someone up with support, love, admiration and belief in them, rather than to tear them down and make them feel helpless and small. It’s about looking into their eyes and seeing the light, love and trust that you put there.

It really is as simple as saying, “I love you. You’re important to me. I think you are beautiful.” And really mean it.
